Only Caucasion Women Need Apply - No Negros or Mexicans

advertisement

Imagine if you will an add looking for a woman to represent the city of Phoenix. Now imagine that this person has to be Caucasian. Are you serious? Are you telling me that the only woman an audience will identify with Phoenix has to be Caucasion? A black or more appropriately, Mexican woman will not work?

I feel foolish when I admit that it was only about two years ago that I believed racism was largely dead in the US. I've learned differently now. With the success of actresses like Jessica Alba and to a lesser extend Jennifer Lopez aren't we ready to at least embrace a Hispanic woman as the face of Phoenix (A heavily Hispanic populated city). I hope this add is a scam add like most of the ads on Craigslist. If it isn't, I hope whatever TV show that comes out of this never gets off the ground. It's time to get past our superficial and vain ideas of what ethnicity is appropriate or not.

This is from http://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/cpg/892153604.html

AUDITIONS ON SATURDAY, HOTEL INFO PROVIDED UPON RESPONSE.

A MAJOR NETWORK TV SHOW IS NOW CASTING! WE ARE LOOKING FOR AZ's MOST DESIRABLE WOMEN WHO FEEL THEY COULD HAVE THEIR OWN SHOW ALL ABOUT THEIR LIFE IN THE CITY!

One of America's most successful and reputable networks is extending an amazing opportunity to a select woman. The cameras will follow you around as you make new friends in a new city, dating, working, shopping, and exploring.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I suspect this is what's normal for entertainment but that still doesn't make it right.

I can just see the legislation coming out of this... Lou Dobbs will be all over this any day.

If a weak dollar is incentive for migrant workers to return to Mexico,
then why not just block any wire transfers to Mexico.

It fits into the current anti immigration, anti migrant worker sentiment.

For a cable news guy, Lou Dobbs is OK.  Of course that's like saying, for a complete incompetent, he's OK.  I think this has more to do with our inner biases and what the entertainment industry would call good business.  They believe, probably correctly, that the American public will have a more more positive image to a white character than a minority.  It's a shame but it's the reality we live in today.

I think I would be more worried about this being someone who is DANGEROUS as opposed to bigoted. This ad sounds frightening, I sense my inner warning bells going "dingdingdingding"

Leogodin, I believe the officials in Pheonix should be made aware of this. Seriously. My instincts tell me this is big trouble.

Agreed!  This sends up signals in a bad way to me, too.

^5 for women's instincts, btb!

Let's hope the air-headed Paris Hilton wannabes don't fall prey to this ad. Scary, because it sounds like that is the very profile this ad is targeting.

Just what I was thinking, KyanaBelle. It can't be legit.

Not "our" e-mail or "the e-mail"

What was the e-mail address? Was it a gmail, yahoo, or some other domain that a so-called "successful and reputable network" would never use?

Just the fact that it was a Craig's list ad makes it likely it was not legit.

The fact that this probably is a scam is more frightening than it being real.

Hopefully it has been taken down in time to avoid any starry eyed women from being injured or killed.

Those responsible for this ad should be arrested, tried and publicly hung. The numbers of young women of all backgrounds that are taken in by these types of schemes are many.

    Jason,

I've only ever deleted two comments that I can remember.  Yours was one of them.
